How the Process Works

This Indole-3-Carbinol is produced by the breakdown of Cruciferous vegetables during digestion. These vegetables must be consumed raw otherwise it removes important enzymes.

Indole-3-Carbinol is a precursor to Diindolylmethane (DIM). Indole-3-Carbinol was discovered as an anti-initiating anticarcinogen back in 1989.  This naturally occurring substance can be beneficial in overall health.

How Does the Diindolylmethane (DIM) Work?Cruciferous Vegetables Increase Testosterone

DIM is an antioxidant that has many benefits.  DIM basically works by metabolizing estrogen creating a better hormone balance. In a man this means potentially more free testosterone.

DIM is an Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) that basically it works to block or reduce excess estrogen effects. In other words DIM helps your body to better metabolize bad estrogen. There are “good” estrogen metabolites and “bad” metabolites.

Take the active estrogen known as estradiol. Estradiol is essentially bad for both men and women in different ways. In men it can be the cause of weight gain and lack of sex drive. Excess amounts of Estradiol in men can cause faster aging as well. DIM helps to harmonize the balance of estradiol to its “good” metabolites.

DIM is an Aromatase Inhibitor

In healthy men the leydig cells are responsible to produce testosterone for your body. The one thing you don’t want to happen is for the free testosterone to get converted into estrogen. This is where DIM works like an Aromatase Inhibitor (AI).

Aromtase Inhibitors stop this action and maintain the vital free testosterone. As a man you need to have and maintain free testosterone.

Where to Find Diindolylmethane (DIM)

Bok choy testosteroneAs mentioned Indole-3-Carbinol is a precursor to Diindolylmethane (DIM). You will get DIM as a result of consuming cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, watercress, bok choy, kale and plenty other green leafy plants.

The cruciferous plant family contain many vitamins and minerals and nutrients known as glucosinolates. Broccoli especially and other plants are capable of producing large amounts of glucosinolates. These plants are under scientific investigation for mitigating cancer.

In Summary

Hopefully this article has answered the question does broccoli increase testosterone. Consuming cruciferous vegetables will allow your body to produce Indole-3-Carbinol and in turn Diindolylmethane (DIM). DIM is a factor in the metabolizing bad estrogens such as estradiol.

DIM works like an Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) thus stopping free testosterone from being converted to estrogen. More free testosterone is what every man needs to gain muscle, strength and for maintaining good sexual functions.

Well it’s a good thing this guy likes brocolli and cauliflower 🙂 I suspect there are other foods that can boost a man’s testosterone, but I’m interested in the point you raise about lowering dangerous levels of estrogen, too. I’ve heard that some of the chemical compounds that are used in plastic food packaging, especially plastic water bottles, can act as an estrogen imitator. Have you heard of that or is that a bunch of bull? I drink a lot of bottled water so this kind of worries me.

Hi W.Kelly, I love how detailed this is, it is like being back in college which brought back so many memories. It definitely shows you have done your research, and I appreciate that. If only I had listened to my parents about eating more broccoli, better late than never I suppose. Before I leave, I just want to add, I like how you simplified the big picture in your summary, thanks for putting this together

I was looking for a way to get my kids to eat their broccoli but at their age I’m not to sure this would be the reason! Great article though.
